Distance learning is gaining popularity among adults who are keen to upgrade themselves for better career opportunities. Distance learning provides an alternative for people to further their education without having to undergo the traditional classroom learning. Nowadays, more adults are becoming interested to pursue higher education in order to compete more effectively in the job market. In response to this growing interest in higher education, education providers are creating new courses using new technologies to meet the demand. Many distance learning online courses are developed to meet this increasing need.

Many people choose this learning mode of study because of the flexibility and freedom it provides. Some of them enroll in this type of learning courses because they are working full-time and could not afford to lose their jobs. They need their income for their own as well as their family’s living expenses, and leaving their jobs would bring about financial problems. They have to find a way to fit learning into their schedule of family and job demands. Some people take up distance learning courses because they live far away from the school and attending classes is inconvenient. For some, this problem arises because the program they want to study is not offered by a nearby school and they have to choose a school far away from their residence. Traveling to a campus far away is inconvenient and time-consuming. Some people have family commitments which make attending class difficult. These people may have elderly or kids at home to look after and are not able to attend classes. Studying through distance learning can enable them to look after their family while they study. There are some people who are keen to do a certain course but feel shy about joining a class. Hence, they choose to do distance learning courses because these courses do not require them to attend classes.

Distance learning has several benefits in which the classroom learning lack. One of the benefits is that a learner can learn at his or her own pace. In classroom learning, the faster learners need to wait for the slower learners to catch up with the lesson before the teacher can move on to the next topic. They have to slow down their pace for the sake of the slower learners. With distance learning, the faster learner can go on to the next topic any time he or she wants. Furthermore, in classroom learning, a learner has only one chance of listening to a class lesson. However, with distance learning, the learner can replay a portion of the audio tape or video, or read again the notes for a particular module.

In classroom learning, each module of the course is given the relative amount of emphasis and time that the teacher deems necessary. Students have the flexibility to spend the amount of time they choose for each module. They can spend less time on the modules that they are familiar with and spend more time and attention on modules which are new to them. This mode of study allows the students to use their time according to their needs.

One of the advantages of distance learning is that the student can have access to learning at any time and any place. There are no restrictions imposed on their study time and location. Students can easily fit learning into their family and work life. They do not need to adjust their family and work commitments in order to attend fixed class schedules. Besides, it enables students to save on travel time and travel costs. They can spend more time and money on other areas.

Distance online learning creates interactions that stimulate understanding and exchange of ideas. Online programs require the student to actively participate in the learning process. Throughout the course, the student is presented with opportunities to interact with the course instructor as well as other students via website forums, chat rooms, Internet conferencing and emails. Online course developers try to get the student to participate and engage as much as possible.

Some research studies have shown that distance learning education can be as effective as campus-based education. These research studies reported that distance students can perform as well as or better than campus-based students. Many students who have succeeded in distance learning education have reported that they have a positive experience with distance learning courses.

We can see from the above that distance learning has many advantages. It provides a great opportunity for people to obtain higher education for their career advancement. If you are interested in taking up a course to upgrade yourself, you can consider a distance learning course. Many schools provide courses in various disciplines. There is a great variety of courses available to select from.

By: Rose Mary

When my friend moved to the Shetlands a few months ago she told me the thing she was most looking forward to was the chance to finally have the time and space to study for a degree. I queried her sanity, pointing out that she was going to struggle to find anywhere in as remote a place as the Shetlands where she could do that. That’s when she told all about the wonder of distance learning online.

Basically computer technology, specifically the internet, has literally revolutionized the whole concept of Distance Learning. Where once there were only limited options to gain meaningful qualifications through correspondence courses, now a whole range of university standard courses and qualifications are available online.

There has effectively been an ‘e-learning revolution’ brought about by advances in internet and web technology. The impact of all this technological development has resulted in better, broader and more flexible opportunities and resources for students to be able to learn today, and in the future.

Where once the prospect of moving from a city to a remote island might have appeared gloomy from the point of view of contact with the outside world, the internet has changed all that. Arguably, the most comprehensive change of all has come in the world of education and qualifications.

These days there are various reputable learning institutes offering all sorts of distance learning courses via the internet. Distance learning online: it has a nice ring to it! From a foundation degree through to a business degree, no matter where you are in the world today the possibility now exists to be able to learn and gain university standard qualifications.

That’s exactly how my far from insane friend explained it to me, and that’s exactly what she is currently in the process of doing. She has already enrolled to study from her small cottage home by the sea on the west coast of Shetland to gain a foundation degree in business management & marketing: and she’s doing it thanks to distance learning online.

What’s more, my dear friend reckons that, while it is fantastic to not have your educational aspirations limited by your geographical location, the best bit about distance learning online is actually the flexibility it affords you with your studies.

With all you need to be able to undertake your course of study available to you carefully packaged and available through the internet, and tutor feedback and contact by email, there are none of the restrictions of class and tutorial times that exist when you physically attend a university.

That’s the real beauty of distance learning online for me, too. It’s got me thinking, as well. Not only do I live in a city, I’m within easy walking distance of a very prestigious university. I’ve been thinking on and off for a while about going back to study. He options I’ve been told about amount to full-time or part-time. But if I were to return to my studies via distance learning online then it would be my-time: I could choose when and how I study and learn.

By: Sarah Maple

Distance learning online is one more advantage that modern technology has offered us for learning at home. if you are new to this concept then you will be surprised to know that a lot of distance learning courses are available in cyberspace. It is up to you only to find a suitable distance learning college and start getting distance education.

Change In Public Opinion

Few years back, before the advent of Internet, it was not possible to even think of distance learning online as an alternative method of acquiring required skills. In 1990s, when these online classes were first launched, many people did not take them seriously. However, today you will find a dramatic change in the public opinion because of many advantages associated with it.

If you are a person who do not like crowds, online education could be the right solution for you. Besides, you also have the freedom of learning at your own pace without any kind of pressure. This is very good for working people as they can carry out their studies while performing their duties also.

Distance learning online allows you to get education from an institute located anywhere in the world. You do not have to move from your place to get required degree. Most of the online colleges do not impose any kind of residency restrictions. You have the facility of choosing a college based in France, if you are interested in learning French art. So, physical distance is no more a hurdle as far as attaining knowledge is concerned.

By: Rishabh Sogani

The format of distance learning courses is different than what most students have experienced. The teaching style is more student directed and you will have to become accustomed to these differences. Distance learning relies heavily on technology. If you aren’t computer and internet savvy, you will need to learn new skills, in addition to your coursework. Look for classes or workshops on computers and the internet. These are often available in public libraries or community centers. You may feel overwhelmed at the thought of taking another class, but the time you spend learning to use the technology will save you time in the long run.

Most colleges offer support for new students. Some schools may have orientation sessions at the start of a new semester. If your school offers this, plan on attending. You will gain valuable information about the structure of the course and the technology used. Instructors often give advice for organizing your time at these sessions. In addition, you will get a feel for the teacher’s expectations. Most schools offer tutorials to help you learn to use the online classroom and other software used in distance learning programs.

Research papers are common assignments in both traditional and distance learning college courses. Utilize the resources offered by your college to help complete necessary research. If the school is in driving distance from your home, take advantage of the college library. Other colleges may allow you to use their library with a student ID from your school. Many schools offer an online library database. Learn to use the database to save time when researching. Quite a bit of research can be done online, which can save you time as well.

The workload in distance learning courses is similar to traditional college coursework. The basic format of most courses involves studying the text, completing assignments and taking exams. Just about all work will involve reading and writing, so take some time to improve your skills in these areas. You will most likely have a fair amount of reading assigned both in the text and from outside sources. Schedule enough time to complete all reading assignments. Get the textbooks early and read the first few chapters before classes start to become familiar with the material.

Taking non traditional college courses requires commitment and time management skills. The ability to work at your own pace can turn into procrastination. Set goals for yourself and make a schedule that will allow you to reach those goals in a reasonable amount of time. Plan on spending at least nine hours each week for each class you take. Schedule study time and stick to your schedule. It’s important not to fall behind and even better to stay a week ahead of the class schedule.

You won’t be completely isolated when taking distance learning courses. Stay in contact with your instructor and ask for feedback regularly. Instructors will have office hours when you can call, or you can stay in touch with email. You may be given opportunities to interact with other students through chats, message boards or online study groups. Take advantage of these opportunities, if studying with others is helpful to you. Some colleges offer online tutoring, usually in math and writing. Take advantage of every opportunity for the best experience.

By: Katie Robbins

Communication plays an important role in the learning process. It enables the sharing of information, thoughts and ideas which contribute to learning. Communication actually creates opportunities for learning to take place. Besides, it also helps in clarifying information, inducing enthusiasm in learning and building positive relationships among learners. Good communication is essential for successful learning. As there is no face-to-face interaction in distance learning courses, communication is given a stronger emphasis by schools providing these courses. Many of them have established more effective modes of communication in their distance learning programs to compensate the lack of face-to-face interaction.

In distance learning, the course content can be communicated through audio tapes, videos, the web, or printed form. The student will be informed about the course content and course directives. Most importantly, the information should be clearly communicated to the students as they need to know exactly what is expected from them. Many distance learning course developers make use of the internet to provide up-to-date information to enhance learning. Besides course materials, course developers usually include other websites and online journals to create more depth in learning. With the internet, the course developer is able to provide online a great supply of current data to support the course materials.

In classroom teaching, the course instructor is able to show enthusiasm for a topic by the use of his or her tone of voice. However, with distance learning, the displaying of enthusiasm through the use of voice by the instructor is not possible most of the time. In this aspect, many schools which produce course content through the web, make use of graphics, videos and photographs to depict various types of emotions. By using these illustrations, the course instructor can communicate his or her emotions towards various topics to the students. This helps to build enthusiasm for the course content. On the other hand, students can express their emotions on the course through communication channels such as web forums and chat rooms. Thus, they can also have the ease of expressing their passion for certain topics. In this way, it would increase their involvement in the course, build enthusiasm for their course of study and enhance their learning process.

As physical separation can create a sense of isolation, many schools build communication channels to decrease this feeling the learners may experience. In distance learning, the modes of communication include electronic mail, website forums, chat rooms and internet conferencing. Their availability helps to increase interaction between instructor and student, as well as interaction among students. Interaction is important in a learning environment. It can enhance learning and promote individual growth. The communication channels also allow the students to ask questions anytime about the course and assignments. During the course, students may not fully understand some topics and need to seek clarifications with the course instructor. Sometimes, even though the course instructor has explained the assignments in the course content, students may still have questions about them. Hence, the various communication channels are useful for these clarifications.

Distance online learning has expanded communication options used by traditional classroom learning. For example, some methods used by students in classroom learning such as asking the instructor questions after class lessons, telephone communication, one-to-one or group discussions are still used in online learning. In addition to these, online learning has electronic mail, mailing lists, chat rooms, message boards and web forums. Thus, online learning has more communication options available for the students and instructors to interact. As there is a variety of modes of communication available, students can have the freedom to select the type of mode they like to use.

From the above, we can see that although distance learning may lack face-to-face interaction, many schools have established various other modes of communication to increase interaction. With the use of current technology, distance learning has a greater variety of modes of communication than the traditional classroom learning. Hence, distance learning is not lacking in communication. In fact, students in distance learning programs have more communication options to select from.

Education has always benefited from developments in technology, but the use of electronic learning or e-learning in colleges has enabled a revolution to take place in how students can learn, especially students who, for a variety of reasons, need to do a lot of course work from home. The impact of e-learning has been a huge benefit to both students and colleges.

The Internet and web technology have given students and colleges the opportunity to take online degrees such as an online business degree and online marketing degree in a distance learning environment, while either looking after a family or while working in full time or part time employment. Web technology is continually improving to make online classes, access to research materials and communication between student and teacher easier to do.

E-learning often takes place in what is often described as the ‘Virtual Learning Environment.’ The virtual learning environment is not intended as a replacement for traditional colleges, but is an alternative that has a good impact on the way students can study through distance learning courses.

Affordability is also a key factor in the popularity of e-learning, with fewer costs associated with traditional college based learning such as travel, distance learning courses such as an online management degree are therefore made more widely available.

Although it is possible to take a degree online, many colleges make e-learning part of existing campus based courses, where it is practical and demanded. This aspect of e-learning – where colleges provide courses according to the needs of the student – makes it often a personalised learning experience for the student.

E-learning also benefits employers, allowing staff to study without taking time off work, or taking less time off work compared to a conventional college, therefore saving on valuable work time and company expenditure. E-learning allows learning to be flexible, based around the needs of the student, and colleges offering online degrees and distance learning understand the needs of the student with professional and family commitments.

Much progress has been made in the development of e-learning teaching tools, to enable students and teachers to get the most out of their online degree.

E-learning can often involve a combination of communication technologies, especially in what is often referred to as the ‘virtual classroom.’ With a range of communication technologies available to students, such as WiFi and mobile telephones, content, classes and communication between student and teacher demonstrate that e-learning is both functional and versatile, and can adapt efficiently to suit the needs of the student.

Of course, e-learning technologies cannot replace the self motivation and discipline needed by students to be successful in their online or distance learning degrees, but can certainly encourage students who may otherwise have not been able to study for their online degrees where it not for the convenience of e-learning. The differences in how colleges approach the learning needs of students because of e-learning have certainly impacted in a constructive way, helping colleges develop their distance or flexible learning courses for the benefit of students.

By: Sarah Maple
